Around 500 new jobs will be created

Essen, 02 December 2019. In light of increased online retailing and the new logistics strategy of Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof, around 500 new jobs are being created at the facility in Essen-Vogelheim which the department store operator will be running itself in the future together with its logistics partner, Fiege.

Until recently, a third party had been managing the warehouse for the department store. Now, the joint venture between Fiege and Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof facilitates the return of the operational responsibility for logistics and tailored solutions for the department store’s growing business. Essen-Vogelheim is the very first location to be transferred over to Fiege and Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof. Other locations will follow starting next year.

“Essen-Vogelheim is a large-scale site that offers ideal accessibility to the traffic infrastructure. It is still highly important for the department store. We are glad to see that the experienced team that has been working here for years remains available for this crucial facility”, Reinhard Haas, Head of Real Estate and Logistics Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof, said.  All employees were taken over under the business transfer agreement. The branch’s realignment and the integration of eCommerce operations have led to excellent prospects for the site: “Human resources will have to be built up on a large scale in Essen-Vogelheim over the next months. Together with the roughly 400 existing jobs at our head office we have built almost 1,000 new insurable jobs”, Haas said.

“We will oversee omnichannel fashion retailing for Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof from here and advance this segment with great intensity”, Walter Johne, Managing Director Omnichannel Retail at Fiege said. The tight dovetailing between online transactions and brick-and-mortar retailing is one of the essential objectives of the new logistics concept for Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof.

The site in Essen-Vogelheim with its 130,000 square metres of logistics space plays a major role in this. “I look forward to the new challenges and the imminent tasks ahead at the central fashion logistics site for Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof”, Ulrich Siggemann said, who as the managing director of Fiege Essen GmbH & Co. KG will be running the branch in Essen-Vogelheim.

“We are thrilled that the City of Essen has not only this solid logistical site to show for, but beyond this can record such a gain in jobs and skills”, the mayor Franz-Josef Britz said. “Not only is Essen a liveable city and surprisingly green – it’s also a highly-attractive business hub right in the centre of the pulsating Ruhr district.”
