The Greven-based family business is building a particularly sustainable multi-user centre for healthcare north of Magdeburg. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2022. The key tenant and biggest client has already been found for the location.

The FIEGE Group laid the foundation stone for its new location in Barleben on Tuesday. The Covid-19 pandemic was the reason why this event was held at such an advanced stage of construction. An ultra-modern logistics facility with around 42,000 square metres of logistics space will be completed in the heart of Saxony-Anhalt by the end of the year. The four-part temperature-controlled warehouse caters specifically to sensitive pharmaceutical products such as prescription drugs, and meets maximum security requirements. Salutas, a pharmaceuticals enterprise that is a subsidiary of Sandoz Deutschland, will become the key tenant in Barleben.

Frank Nase, Mayor of the Municipality of Barleben, congratulated FIEGE on the laying of the foundation stone: “We are excited to welcome a tradition-steeped yet modern family business such as FIEGE, in Barleben. Having one of Europe’s leading logistics enterprises here strengthens the Municipality of Barleben as a business location in addition to creating valuable jobs in the region.”

Jens Fiege, fifth-generation CEO of the FIEGE Group who has been managing the company together with his cousin, Felix Fiege, thanked the mayor for what has been a good and constructive collaboration and emphasised the relevance of the new location: “To build a flagship project like this one, many cogs need to mesh. We are very grateful for the outstanding support that we received from the Municipality of Barleben as well as our project partners. The new FIEGE location in Barleben will be one of the most sustainable logistics centres for pharmaceuticals in Germany. Its special design – which includes two photovoltaic systems and a VRV heating system that is not reliant on gas – sets new standards in the World of FIEGE and beyond.”

The logistics centre offers favourable transport accessibility in direct proximity to Germany’s A2 and A14 motorways. The project is being implemented by FIEGE Real Estate. This is the first FIEGE multi-user centre of its kind which meets both the Well Building Standard from the International Well Building Institute as well as the Platinum certificate awarded by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). “Sustainability is one of FIEGE’s central strategic priorities. By building energy-efficient logistics properties, we contribute significantly towards passing a climate neutral family business to the next generation”, Jens Fiege added.
