8,000+ solar panels: FIEGE instals PV system in Peine

The logistics company FIEGE installs a photovoltaic system on the rooftop of its logistics centre in Peine, Lower Saxony. On an area of 30,000 square metres, around 8,000 solar panels will generate 2.7 gigawatt hours of electrical power every year, most of which will be fed into the public grid.

The Greven-based family business, FIEGE is installing the company’s biggest photovoltaic system to-date on the roof of its multi-user centre located at the Peine Ost industrial estate. With a total capacity output of 3,260 kilowatts peak, the system will generate up to 2.7 gigawatt hours of renewable energy per year, which is equivalent to the power consumption of around 700 households. With this approach, FIEGE covers on the one hand the logistics centre’s own requirements in the metropolitan region of Hanover-Braunschweig-Göttingen-Wolfsburg and on the other feeds up to 90 per cent of the solar power produced into the public grid.

“It is the declared goal of FIEGE to hand over the family business to the next generation to carbon neutral standards. To achieve this, we continually intensify our sustainability endeavours across the board”, Thoralf Schuster, Managing Director FIEGE Real Estate explains. “One important pillar in this regard includes the comprehensive expansion of PV systems on the rooftops of our facilities through which we aim to gradually convert our logistics centres into small solar power plants.”

The power of the sun: The family business FIEGE will be generating around 2.7 gigawatt hours of solar power annually in Peine as from the summer of 2024.

Thanks to the building’s efficiency, the multi-user centre in Peine consumes only a small amount of the power thus generated itself, thanks to a smart LED lighting system inside the building. On many days of the year, the PV system will cover the logistics centre’s complete power consumption and will still be able to feed a large part of the renewable energy produced into the public grid. By covering the warehouse’s entire area in PV panels, the system secures the almost self-sufficient supply of power for the FIEGE location even on days with little sunlight.

The PV system is scheduled to launch in the summer of 2024. “We are very much looking forward to this. For our location in Peine this presents a crucial and valuable step on our pathway to even greater sustainability”, Schuster adds. “In parallel with this installation, we are also working on concepts and solutions for other logistics centres of FIEGE to tap the renewable energy produced in Peine in the future.”
