Science Based Targets initiative validates FIEGE’s net-zero targets

Under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), FIEGE has committed to lowering its direct and indirect emissions of climate-relevant greenhouse gases to net zero in the long term. The SBTi has now officially acknowledged the climate targets of the Greven-based logistics company.
Rising to the occasion: the Science Based Targets initiative has validated FIEGE's net-zero targets. The contract logistics expert has committed to lowering its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions over the next five years by 50.8 percent (baseline year 2021) as well as its Scope 3 emissions by 42 per cent (baseline year 2023). By 2050, FIEGE wants to completely reduce its direct and indirect emissions to net zero in line with the Paris Agreement, to meet the 1.5°C target.
Felix Fiege, who has been running the more than 150-year-old family business as Co-CEO with his cousin, Jens Fiege says: “These past 18 months have seen us work assiduously towards developing ambitious climate targets based on which we will implement our company’s net-zero transformation. The validation of these scienced-based targets by SBTi constitutes a key step for us which will empower us to fulfil our sustainability promise while providing even greater transparency for our 22,000 employees, our clients and society.”
Last year already, the logistics company’s Sustainability team – in preparation of developing a roadmap – carried out multiple workshops at the international business units of the FIEGE Group. It was the aim of these workshops to identify as many comprehensive and diverse measures as possible which aim to reduce CO2e. In the next step, these findings are to be converted into detailed reduction pathways and set into structures which track the respective actions and KPI. Key components for this include, for example, the further collection and quality improvement of data; the progressing electrification of the vehicle fleet and an even more focused switch-over to alternative fuels; the energy-efficient operation and expansion of FIEGE’s 136 locations around the world; the optimised use of resources; as well as a close cooperation with clients and suppliers.
Sandra Achternbusch, Executive Director Corporate Sustainability at FIEGE, says: “As a family business, we want to – and must – live up to our climate responsibility. Climate change mitigation forms a crucial part in our corporate strategy and can only be achieved when we unite all colleagues behind this goal. We are excited for the SBTi to have validated our net-zero goals which is an important acknowledgement of our sustainability efforts.”
