FIEGE Sustainability Report: 400 percent rise in green energy

The FIEGE Group has published its sustainability report for the financial year 2024. With this report, the Greven-based logistics company spotlights the progress and success on its pathway towards greater sustainability for its clients, partners and employees. One particular highlight last year: being awarded the Deutsche Nachhaltigkeitspreis.
All things come in threes: FIEGE has published the third sustainability report in the company’s history. On roughly 100 pages, the family business details the achievements that it actioned successfully around its People, Planet and Partners pillars last year. One of the things the Corporate Sustainability team worked on extensively was to further improve the information base for the CO2e balance sheet across the entire value chain. To a great result: even though the information compiled was highly detailed, FIEGE reduced direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2 and Scope 3) emissions compared to the previous year by a further six per cent. The climate footprint drawn up was also verified for the first time externally and independently by DEKRA.
“Sustainability as a central pillar of our corporate strategy is not negotiable since it affords us long-term advantages both on an environmental, economic as well as social level. We are proud to have anchored the subject deeply in FIEGE’s DNA as well as in the day-to-day work routines of our roughly 22,000 colleagues by now”, Sandra Achternbusch, Executive Director Corporate Sustainability explains. “Even if the legal requirement on sustainability reporting has been postponed by two years following the EU’s new Omnibus Directive, it was always clear to us that we will proactively continue with our reporting – which has been ongoing since 2022 – on a voluntary basis.”
Further key milestones were reached during the financial year 2024. For example, the over 150-year-old family business endorsed the Diversity Charter, joining Germany’s biggest pro-diversity and pro-inclusion initiative at the place of work. Also, for the first time, FIEGE conducted a complete materiality assessment based on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). At the same time, reduction targets were established to lower overall emissions of FIEGE in the context of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to net zero in the long term. An important lever for this is the ongoing expansion of photovoltaic installations whereby FIEGE was able to increase the share of captive energy generated from renewables Group-wide by around 400 per cent last year.
FIEGE was also honoured with a special accolade just before the year came to an end: “In November 2024, we accepted the National German Sustainability Award in Düsseldorf for companies in the category for Transport and Logistics. The award is a great recognition for us as a service provider that we are on the right pathway, but even more so an incentive to continue with our mission jointly with our clients and suppliers”, Achternbusch says. Our long-term goal is to hand the family business to the next generation to GHG-neutral standards: “We will continue to work on this in the future together with our clients and business partners.”
