Interview with Kristina Haselmann

  • Junior Managerin Corporate Sustainability and parental leave substitute for Fátima Bittel
  • With FIEGE since May 2021

HOW DID YOU BECOME AWARE OF FIEGE?

I became aware of the company through other employees. A current colleague told me about the FIEGE podcast with Fátima Bittel. Listening to the podcast made me curious and afterwards I looked around on the FIEGE homepage and discovered my advertised position. At the time, I was in the final stages of my bachelor’s thesis. Since I was dealing with the topic of sustainability as part of my thesis, I used the podcast as inspiration during that time. Now I am substituting for Fátima Bittel (Manager Corporate Sustainability at FIEGE), as she is on parental leave.

DID YOU ALWAYS HAVE THE DESIRE TO WORK IN SUSTAINABILITY?

Before I started my studies, I had already worked in the textile industry for eight years, specifically in the area of production in Asia. There I already had contact with the topic of sustainability. However, I wanted to approach the whole topic more holistically, so I started my studies. I then wrote my bachelor’s thesis on the topic of “Sustainability in the corporate culture of small to medium-sized companies”. Specifically, about how they can use their existing corporate culture to establish sustainability in the company.

HOW WAS YOUR START AT FIEGE AND HOW WERE YOU INTEGRATED INTO THE TEAM?

The start was actually quite fast and spontaneous. Since Fátima was about to go on maternity leave, I received my feedback within a few days and started working shortly afterwards. Nevertheless, the start was very good, because I quickly had a lot of contact with different departments – even if this initially took place digitally. For example, I am part of the workstream, which is formed by employees from different departments and is dedicated to the topic of sustainability at FIEGE. What I noticed right away is that everyone is very open and friendly. You can always reach out to any of your colleagues with your questions.

WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT TASKS AT FIEGE?

Sustainability has been practiced and lived in many areas of FIEGE for a long time. In addition, we take a holistic approach to sustainability. Of course, you have to set focal points or priorities within the individual topics, but the goal is to harmonize all three pillars of sustainability. My task is to capture and bundle all these different areas. This also includes creating synergies between the different areas. I try to make these perspectives on sustainability presentable and measurable and then communicate them both internally and externally.
In addition, the current focus is on driving, implementing and communicating the strategy within the company. One project in any case is to measure FIEGE’s carbon footprint. This is a longer-term project that aims to reduce FIEGE’s CO2 emissions.

WHAT MAKES YOUR WORK AT FIEGE SPECIAL?

Here, you simply get the opportunity to help shape and participate in many aspects. Nothing is set in stone – everything is flexible and changing. And that gives you the feeling that you are not stuck working in old, dusty structures. This applies to the entire company, as FIEGE is permanently in a process of further development. On the one hand, FIEGE is a family-owned company and on the other hand, it manages to look towards the future. In doing so, the topic of sustainability, for example, is approached from different angles and is thus very multifaceted.

WHAT IS THE WORKING ATMOSPHERE LIKE AT FIEGE?

The atmosphere is very open and easy-going. There is generally a lively exchange about various topics. What is particularly striking is that you hardly notice any kind of “company hierarchy”, as it is simply very flat and at eye level.DOES FIEGE FIT YOU? AND IF SO, WHY?
FIEGE fits me because I like the look into the future and I find this in myself as well. That was originally the reason why I got involved with the topic of sustainability. Because I would like to contribute something to the future.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FIEGE AS AN EMPLOYER?

Yes, in fact I already have. I have made the recommendation to both my friends and my family.
