FIEGE converts 130 IVECO buses for rail replacement service
FIEGE tec, a subsidiary of the FIEGE Group, completed a comprehensive end-of-assembly commission for its business and trading partner, IVECO BUS. 130 brand-new CROSSWAY LE intercity buses were retrofitted with an on-board sanitation system for passengers at the Greven-based workshop that caters to trucks and buses.
FIEGE tec, the partnering workshop and distributor for trucks and buses based in Greven-Reckenfeld, has converted 130 IVECO BUS vehicles to be used for rail replacement transport services. The workshop’s team fitted and wired the freshwater flush toilets into the modern intercity CROSSWAY buses. The retrofitting was then inspected by TÜV Nord before the vehicles were delivered to the client, IVECO BUS.
“As soon as the buses arrived, we carried out a post-delivery inspection as recommended by the manufacturer, to document potential manufacturing defects or damage that may have occurred during transport, and to warrant full functionality and vehicular safety”, Adrian Melcher, Branch Manager at FIEGE tec explains. The second step was to prepare the installation of the supplied on-board toilets. Melcher says: “Next to a wooden structure into which the on-board facility is fixated, our workshop team laid the lines needed for the power, water and air supply to be connected with the vehicle’s main electronics. Afterwards, we conducted a functional test of every toilet and cleaned the buses thoroughly both inside and out.”

Fitting the on-board toilet system is a highly complex operation which required FIEGE tec to remove two folding seats. The standing area also had to be adapted accordingly. As a result, TÜV had to review not only the technical fittings but also the maximum transportation capacities of the highly visible, traffic purple-coloured intercity buses. Melcher says: “Despite more than 35 years of experience in the market, large-scale orders like this one are always special because the work must be carried out under intense pressure and we are required to demonstrate the full range of our expertise within a few weeks only. We are extremely pleased that everything meshed to perfection and that we were able to hand over the 130 vehicles to the clients on schedule.”
