FIEGE opens new logistics centre in Vienna

The logistics company FIEGE is strengthening its presence in Austria. Located centrally right next to FIEGE’s already existing branch in Vienna, a new additional logistics centre has been built by the over 150-year-old family business. Thursday marked its official opening.
The contract logistician FIEGE has completed its new logistics centre in Vienna. With this modern property built on Unilever’s former production site on the 7th crossroad, or Haidequerstrasse, the family business from Greven in Westphalia is doubling its logistical capacities in Austria’s capital, further strengthening its long-term footprint in the alpine republic. Thursday marked the official opening of the new building in front of around 100 invitees.
Thomas Steinhart, the district commissioner of Simmering, Vienna’s 11th district, said during the inauguration ceremony: “Roughly a year ago, we celebrated the topping-out ceremony right here. At the time, you could only guess what the logistics centre would look like once completed. To see it now, here, and celebrate its opening is a wonderful moment for FIEGE, but also for the district of Simmering. I am thrilled that FIEGE decided to make a long-term investment into the Vienna-Simmering location and continue to grow here. Congratulations on the completion of the new logistics centre.“

Dr. Ewa Samel, member of the Vienna parliament and municipal council, stressed the following in her welcoming address: “Logistics is not only a key element of our lives, but also a mainstay of our economy and therefore also the backbone of any city. I am therefore very thrilled about FIEGE’s clear commitment towards its Vienna location and would like to congratulate the entire team on the opening.”
Peter Scherbel, Executive Board member of the FIEGE Group, explained: “When we started off with our Austria-based operations in 1998, we most likely did not consider it possible that we would open such an amazing new location right in the centre of Vienna a good quarter of a century later. Therefore, I would like to warmly thank everyone involved in this project and made the expansion of our location possible. We have good reason to be very proud of our new logistics centre here in Vienna. The new building is a milestone for the entire FIEGE Group. It creates a great opportunity for us to offer efficient logistics, maximum flexibility and especially long-term growth possibilities to our clients at an extraordinary top spot.”

FIEGE Real Estate oversaw the implementation of the brownfield project. The new, two-storey multi-user centre holds a good 20,000 square metres of additional logistics space for clients operating in Consumer Products, Industry, Fast Moving Consumer Goods, Fashion and Healthcare. It meets the highest sustainability standards. Joachim Stern, Managing Director of FIEGE Austria adds: “As is the case for all of FIEGE’s construction projects, once again our focus here was sustainability.” FIEGE’s new logistics centre complies with EU taxonomy and has been built to meet high energy efficiency standards. A PV system has been installed on its rooftop, and the building meets the Gold certification requirements of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), Stern pointed out. “Moreover, the location has been designed to offer a range of automation options and provides optimum requirements to ensure smooth logistics for our clients – from typical warehousing to transportation, to value-added services. And we are very pleased indeed that, following the construction phase, things can finally kick off at our new warehouse.”
